CHARLES ETOK EDWARDSEN MITIGATION BANK protects critical aquatic resources in northern Alaska. EIP and Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC) collaborated to protect more than 2,297 acres from development and other pressures that threaten the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska’s North Slope. This area provides habitat for 35 avian and 9 mammal species. These include Steller’s eider, spectacled eider, and polar bear, all of which are federally designated as threatened species. The Charles Etok Edwardsen Mitigation Bank also generates a new source of revenue for UIC and its shareholders, many of whom reside in nearby Utqiaġvik, Alaska.

Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC) is an Alaska Native Corporation headquartered in Utqiaġvik, Alaska that provides social and economic resources for more than 2,900 Iñupiat shareholders. UIC is one of about 200 Alaska Native village corporations created under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 in settlement of aboriginal land claims. Incorporated in 1973, UIC is in the top ten of Alaska businesses based on revenue, as ranked by on the 2023 Alaska Business magazine Top 49ers list. The UIC family of companies represent diverse industries throughout the United States. These include commercial and government services and Arctic operations. UIC owns the land where Charles Etok Edwardsen Mitigation Bank has been established. It partnered with EIP on development of the mitigation bank.
