Mulberry Grove Mitigation Bank

MULBERRY GROVE MITIGATION BANK focuses on restoring, enhancing, and preserving three tributaries of Mulberry Creek and a slope-riverine wetland complex in Harris County, Georgia. The project aims to restore floodplain connectivity, increase bedform diversity, and improve both aquatic and riparian habitats. By reestablishing natural channel dimensions and reconnecting streams to a functional floodplain, the project helps reduce streambank erosion, improve floodwater storage, and enhance nutrient filtration from surrounding riparian buffers. Channel stabilization and in-stream structures support aquatic habitat diversity by maintaining riffle-pool sequences, while native buffer and floodplain restoration further prevent erosion and improve overall habitat quality.

The mitigation strategy includes restoration, enhancement, and preservation across three streams and nine wetland monitoring units. Each stream is divided into eleven mitigation reaches based on flow patterns and habitat conditions, with further segmentation based on treatment type. The project restores approximately 3,600 linear feet of stream using Priority I and II restoration techniques and implements a comprehensive approach that includes wetland hydrology restoration/enhancement, wetland vegetation restoration, upland buffer restoration/preservation, stream restoration and enhancement, and riparian buffer restoration/preservation.

In total, the project restores over 23 acres of wetlands, more than 1 acre of stream/valley complex, enhances more than 6 acres of wetlands, and preserves more than 13 acres of upland buffer, contributing to long-term ecological stability and improved watershed function.
